Echternach’s Enchanted Mirror

In the heart of Luxembourg, the Echternach Lake is a impressive body of water; it’s an artificial marvel that mirrors the sky and the rich history of its surroundings. Created in the 1970s, this 30-hectare expanse shows how human ingenuity can transform the landscape into a recreational paradise.

As summer graces the region, the lake becomes a living painting, with clouds drifting lazily across its surface, creating a mesmerising spectacle of natural beauty.

Echternach, Luxembourg’s oldest town, which boasts a history that dates back to the 7th century, is the cradle of Luxembourg’s culture. The city was founded around the Abbey of Echternach by Saint Willibrord in 698. It has been a beacon of European culture and Christianisation, with its Benedictine abbey becoming a hub of artistic and scholarly pursuit during the 9th and 11th centuries. The city’s architecture is a tapestry of time, with Roman villas, ancient parish churches, and medieval walls that tell stories of the past.

Today, Echternach is a cultural city par excellence, recognised as a “European destination of excellence” by the European Commission and home to the UNESCO-listed Dancing Procession of Echternach.

The Echternach Lake, with its surrounding greenery and the gentle hills of the Müllerthal region, invites visitors to immerse themselves in the tranquility of nature and the echoes of history. Whether it’s through a leisurely stroll, a peaceful boat ride, or a moment of reflection by the water’s edge, the lake offers a chance to connect with the past while enjoying the present.
